Train Driver Job Brief:

Train drivers are required to operate under strict rules and safety procedures at all times whilst also providing expectational customer service and communication to the passengers who are traveling on their trains. In addition to these skills, as a trainee train driver you will need to learn large amounts of job-specific information, work alongside other train operating staff (Train Guard and Ticketing Staff), follow strict rules and policies, adhere to signaling and operational procedures, operate within safety parameters, have a flexible approach to work, work unsociable hours, communicate effectively and be able to work alone for long periods of time.

Train Driver Assessable Key Skills, Qualities & Attributes Based On The Competencies:

  • SAFETY CRITICAL ROLE – The train driver role is safety-critical, which means you have to operate at all times following procedures, rules and regulations.
  • CUSTOMER SERVICE – Be able to operate whilst providing great customer service, ensuring the safety of your passengers is paramount at all times and ensuring trains run on time.
  • COMMUNICATION SKILLS – You will be required to communicate messages and updates to your passengers periodically during their journey to improve the service you are offering and to also keep them updated on delays, if and when they occur.
  • FLEXIBLE APPROACH TO WORKING – You will need to be able to demonstrate a flexible approach to working at all times and also live within a set distance of the train station or depot (usually 30 minutes but this can vary).
  • REMAIN CALM UNDER PRESSURE – At times throughout your career as a train driver, you will need to remain calm at all times when dealing with emergency situations and be able to follow you training at all times to ensure the safe travel of your passengers and the rolling stock you are responsible for.
  • CONCENTRATE FOR LONG PERIODS OF TIME – As a train driver, you will be required to sit there, in your cab, for long periods of time, concentrating intently on the job of driving your train safely to ensure it arrives at its destination.
