The following 5 short but powerful tips have been designed to enable you to get the most from your interview preparation. Regardless of the job you are being interviewed for, or the tech company it is with, study the tips carefully and apply them during your interview.

TECH COMPANY INTERVIEW TIP #1

There will be three types of questions asked during your interview: motivational, behavioral, and technical. Make sure you prepare answers to all three types of questions:

MOTIVATIONAL QUESTIONS: These questions assess your motivations for wanting the job: Why do you want this job; tell me about yourself, why should we hire you, what are your weaknesses, why do you want to work for us, etc.

BEHAVIORAL QUESTIONS: These questions focus on how you have performed in previous relevant situations that are likely to appear in the role you have applied for. Behavioral questions often start with, tell me about a time when you… 

TECHNICAL QUESTIONS: Technical interview questions are specific to your chosen role. For example, if you are applying to become a Data Scientist, you will need to answer questions such as: how is logistic regression done? Explain the steps in making a decision tree. How do you build a random forest model?

TECH COMPANY INTERVIEW TIP #2

It is imperative you spend time researching the tech company you have applied to work for. They will ask you the interview questions, what do you know about our company, and why do you want to work for us?

You must give genuine, passionate, and valid reasons why you want to work for their company and the only way to answer these questions effectively is to research the company in detail. To research the tech company properly, we suggest visiting their website, their social media platforms, and their LinkedIn corporate account to assess their herstory, values, and latest news stories.

TECH COMPANY INTERVIEW TIP #3

A great way to increase your chances of passing your tech interview is to carry out a mock interview. A mock interview is a proven method for ensuring you are fully prepared for the real thing. TECH COMPANY INTERVIEW TIP #4

The difference between those candidates who pass their tech interview, and those that fail, is evidence. If you can give the interviewer evidence of where you have previously performed tasks and completed projects to a very high standard you are more likely to succeed!

When answering the behavioral interview questions, use the S.T.A.R technique to structure your responses. The S.T.A.R technique stands for:

SITUATION: Start your answer by outlining the situation you were faced with.

TASK: Move on and explain the task that needed to be done. This demonstrates your awareness of the situation you are in.

ACTION: Now go into detail about the action you took to complete the task.

RESULT: Finally, finish off and declare the results following our action and make sure the outcome was a positive one!

TECH COMPANY INTERVIEW TIP #5

At the end of your tech interview, you will have the opportunity to ask the panel some questions of your own. Use this as an opportunity to demonstrate you care about their company and you want it to succeed. Here are three great questions to consider asking:

1. What would you need me to focus on in the first 30 days of starting?
2. What’s the culture like within the organization?
3. What advice would you give to the successful candidate who wants to do a great job in the role?
