“The first thing I will do is spend time at home prior to commencing the role re-reading your company ethos, values and customer principles. I need to know these off by heart, as I will expect everyone within my team to work towards these in everything they do. I will then meet with my team and be cheery, positive and supportive in how I communicate with them. During that initial meeting I will also explain the standards I expect from each team member and reiterate how important it is we all work together to achieve the aims and objectives of the supermarket. As the first few weeks in the role progress, I will then sit down in private with each team member to get to know them in greater detail. This will allow me to work with their strengths and also help them to improve on their weak areas. Although I am not yet successful at interview, I do feel excited about the possibility of becoming your Supermarket Team Leader and I feel I would very much thrive in this role and get a great amount of job satisfaction from it.”

Supermarket Team Leader Job Brief:

Supermarket Team Leaders require varied skills to perform the role competently and in line with the brand, ethos and standards laid out by the supermarket of their choice. The supermarket and grocery industry is fiercely competitive, and with the up rise of many online delivery companies, it is even more important that Supermarket Team Leaders fly the flag for the company brand and provide outstanding customer service to all visitors and shoppers who enter or come into contact with the store. You will need a flexible approach to working, be able to motivate your team to maintain the standards of the supermarket, assess and maintain shelf stock levels, manage underperforming staff, conduct appraisals and also respond to customer complaints and issues as and when they arise.

Supermarket Team Leader Assessable Key Skills, Qualities & Attributes:

  • STAFF MOTIVATIONAL SKILLS – A Supermarket Team Leader is required to motivate his or her team to achieve the goals and objectives of the supermarket.
  • EXCEPTIONAL CUSTOMER – Provide timely and exceptional customer service for all people who visit and shop at the supermarket.
  • ATTENTION TO DETAIL – Supermarket Team Leaders are required to demonstrate good attention to detail when assessing stock levels and also ordering supplies from stockists and third-party retailers.
  • STOCK TAKING SKILLS – Part of your role will be to monitor and assess stock levels and report to the procurement team which stock is running low. Within the majority of large supermarkets, this is carried out by computer and scanning systems which you will need to be familiar with.
  • TEAM WORKING SKILLS – As a Supermarket Team Leader you will undoubtedly require great team working skills and also show the interview panel you can motivate your team in achieving the aims of the supermarket you are working for.
  • SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT SKILLS – Supermarket Team Leaders are supervisors and managers and will be required to be responsible for the day-to-day running of their team, including managing shifts, personnel issues, sickness absence, performance management and conducting appraisals

5 TIPS FOR PASSING THE SUPERMARKET TEAM LEADER INTERVIEW!

TIP #1 – Supermarket Team Leader’s need to have an abundance of skills, and these will be assessed during the interview. You should demonstrate an ability to work under pressure, provide outstanding customer service, abide by the values of the supermarket brand you are choosing to work for, take a pride in your appearance and be able to motivate your team to achieve the time-sensitive tasks that form part of the role.
