Q1. Tell me about a time when you worked as part of a team to complete a challenging task?

SUGGESTED ANSWER:

SITUATION – “I was working as part of a small team in an office and we were tasked with looking at ways to improve the marketing strategy for a client who had a great looking website, that was not yet generating any sales.”

TASK – “It was the task of the team to analyze the website and look for different ways to generate more traffic to the site, and ultimately, more sales through strong conversions.”

ACTION – “We started off by creating a plan of action. It was my job as part of the team to source different marketing opportunities that would suit the website, whilst other people assessed the website’s functionality and also how effective the website’s shopping cart was in terms of the customer buying experience. I managed to quickly come up with six different options for the client to try in respect of marketing, including blogs, Google Advertising and also YouTube Adverts. Other members of the team also came up with suggestions for improvement which we then presented to the client in a comprehensive report.”

RESULT – “The client then utilized all of our suggestions, and three months down the line, their website was converting well thanks to the combined efforts of our team.

SUGGESTED ANSWER

SITUATION – “I can remember helping an elderly customer one day on the telephone choose the right product for their grandson’s birthday. Basically, we were a website that sold online gifts for people for various celebratory occasions, and we always ensured we delivered exceptional customer service. This particular gentleman was having difficulty viewing our online catalog, and I was determined to help him out as much as possible.”

TASK – “I saw it as my duty to take my time and make his experience as pain free as possible. I have a grandfather myself, and I understood they are not usually that great at operating computers. I needed to be patient whilst helping him choose the right product.”

ACTION – “Whilst on the phone, I suggested that I send him a printed catalogue in the post, to make it easier for him to read and choose a gift at his own leisure. He agreed this was a great idea, and so I printed off our online catalog and sent a copy to arrive the next day via the postal service. I told him to call me back when he was ready to place an order, and I finished off by giving him my name and my direct line telephone number.”

RESULT – “A couple of days later, the gentleman called me back with his product reference number. I then spent time taking his payment details over the phone and reassuring him his payment was secure and safe. I then dispatched the order and the customer thanked me for going above and beyond what was required to help him choose and dispatch the right product for his grandson.”

What Are Situational Interview Questions and How to Answer Them


Situational interview questions have long been used as a means for assessing a potential employee’s ability to carry out the role they are being interviewed for to the right standards. Situational interview questions often start with either “Describe a time when you…?”, or “Explain a situation you were involved in when you…?” Although they can be posed in different formats, the important thing to remember is you must answer each question concentrating on a SPECIFIC situation you encountered, and what you did whilst involved. The aim is to show the hiring manager that you are capable of performing the relevant skill or competency being assessed.

How to Answer Situational Interview Questions

Interview expert, Richard McMunn, recommends you use the tried-and-tested STAR interview technique whilst responding to situational interview questions. When you use this method, you are ensuring your answers are in-depth, specific and, more importantly, packed full of evidence to support your abilities.

The STAR interview technique consists of the following format:

SITUATION – Start off by briefly explaining the situation you were in.

TASK – Briefly explain the task that needed to be done.

ACTION – Go into details relating to the action you took to complete the task, and also refer to any action’s others took as part of your group or team.

RESULT – Finally, tell the interview panel the results following yours and other’s actions. It is very important to finish off with a positive result.

3 IMPORTANT TIPS FOR PASSING ANY SITUATIONAL INTERVIEW!

TIP #1 – Prior to your interview, predict the type of situational interview questions that are likely to come up based on the job description.
