TIP #1 – Regardless of whether you are applying to join the RAF as an Airman or Officer, we strongly recommend you learn and understand the importance of the Royal Air Force core values. These are Respect, Integrity, Excellence and Service. Visit the RAF website and ensure you fully understand what the core values are and how you will be able to prove to the panel you have the potential to match them with your chosen RAF role.

TIP #2 – In the build-up to your RAF interview, spend lots of time learning about the RAF’s history, their values, the different regiments and squadrons, the equipment, resource weapons and aircraft they utilise, and also whereabouts in the world the RAF are operating from right now. The majority of this information will be available within your RAF recruitment literature and also on the RAF website. Be fully prepared for the RAF interview question: “What do you know about the Royal Air Force and where we are operating from right now?”

TIP #3 – If you are attending an RAF Officer interview, you will be assessed against numerous leadership qualities, including your ability to lead, motivate and inspire the men and women under your command. You will also be assessed against your ability to remain calm whilst under pressure, and also your ability to plan (planning exercises) and carry out basic calculations in respect of speed, distance and time.

TIP #4 – Have a number of examples of how you are already taking responsibility for your own actions before you join the RAF, and also think of your greatest achievement to date. If you already have a history of achieving in your personal or professional life, then you are far more likely to pass the tough initial RAF training course.

TIP #5 – Respect for people who are in positions of authority is a key part of working in disciplined services such as the Royal Air Force. If you are asked what you thought of your teachers or tutors at the interview, do not be disrespectful in any way, shape or form.  Another key assessable area at the RAF interview is teamwork and fitness. Think about how you keep yourself physically and mentally fit and also whether you have worked as, or are currently part of, a team.
