SUGGESTED ANSWER:
βFirst and foremost, I am someone who is disciplined and able to follow strict rules and procedures, ensuring I operate safely and competently at all times. I fully understand that, as a Paramedic, there will be many and varied challenging situations that I will have to deal with, and I am prepared for these. I already have some experience of working under pressure and dealing with difficult and confrontational people in previous roles. I am able to remain calm under pressure, carry out a risk assessment of the dangers and threats posed in a situation, and then apply myself using the training that I would receive as a Paramedic. In addition to the skills just mentioned, I am also a great team worker, a strong communicator, able to collaborate with others, have a loyal and committed approach to all tasks and can be relied upon to solve difficult problems whenever presented. Finally, I am fully aware of the responsibilities and pressure that comes within the role of a Paramedic and I feel strongly that if I am given the opportunity to become one, I will not let you down.”
SUGGESTED ANSWER
βI would remain calm, composed and resilient at all times when dealing with situations of this nature. I would follow my training and adhere to the operational training procedures I would have learnt during my Paramedic training course. I would carry out a dynamic risk assessment of the scene and the potential dangers posed, and if safe to do so, I would approach the patient speaking to him or her in a calm but firm manner, explaining the reasons why I was there and how I intended to help them. I would then utilise effective defusing techniques to persuade them to let me conduct a triage assessment of their injuries with the view to getting them the treatment they needed as soon as possible. If the patient was being aggressive, or threatening myself and my colleagues, I would most probably retreat to a safe place and call the Ambulance Control Centre to request the attendance of the police. I would never put myself or my crew in danger and would always follow my training and operational procedures at all times in situations like this.β

Yes! I Want To Pass My Interview!Paramedics are the front-line staff of the Ambulance Service NHS Trust and they provide an outstanding service to the local community in which they serve. You will need a wide range and diverse set of skills if you are to be able to perform this role competently, professionally and in line with the guidelines and procedures laid down by the Ambulance Service. In a world where public sector workers are required to work with fewer resources and staff, you will need resilience, dedication, a calm and confident demeanour and an ability to learn a large amount of job specific information and training.
The Paramedic interview questions and answers contained within this guide are unique and will help you to pass your interview with any of the UK-based Ambulance Services.
TIP #1 β Prior to attending the Paramedic interview, make sure you understand the key qualities and attributes required to perform the role to the appropriate standard. Some of the qualities and attributes include an ability to work hard and remain calm under pressure, work alongside and communicate with other Ambulance Operational Staff and Hospital Staff, follow operational procedures and training, be able to work long and arduous hours during evenings and weekends and learn and retain large amounts of job specific information.
TIP #2 β During the interview, be prepared to provide evidence of where you have remained calm under pressure and also dealt with pressurised situations and potentially aggressive people. Dealing with aggressive patients is all part and parcel of the Paramedic role, so being able to provide details of where you have done this in the past will be advantageous.
TIP #3 β Make good use of the STAR technique when answering all of the interview questions that require a specific answer based on past behaviours. The STAR method refers to SITUATION, TASK, ACTION and RESULT and it is a great way to ensure you cover each element of the question that requires a solid, evidence-based response.
TIP #4 β As a Paramedic you will have to be accountable for your actions, and on that basis, during the Paramedic interview we recommend you stress how important it is to always follow your training and operational procedures at incidents you attend. For example, you may get asked interview questions such as βCan you give an example of when you followed strict rules and procedures?β or βCan you provide a specific example of when you adhered to safety rules at work?β. Within the Paramedic interview guide we have provided you with sample responses to these questions.
TIP #5 β Paramedics must be able to work with people from diverse backgrounds and also treat patients from all walks of life. You must treat everyone fairly, consistently and in line with the requirements of the Ambulance Service Trust you are working for. If you are not able to treat people with respect and dignity at all times, the role of a Paramedic may not be for you.
