In a society where mental health is thankfully more prominent than ever, it is important we provide competent and professional mental health support workers, nurses and practitioners to help people overcome the challenges that life presents. A mental health support worker, nurse or practitioner is responsible for providing and facilitating care and support for patients and clients in line with the policies and procedures determined by the NHS Trust or healthcare organization they are employed by.

Part of your role as a Mental Health Practitioner is to look after a patient’s mental health and this can be achieved through therapy, drugs, consultations, art or a combination of all four. There are many different areas of expertise you can specialize in within mental health, but they all carry similar duties and responsibilities in respect of professionalism, compliance, confidentiality, health and safety, and regulation.

Whilst there are many core qualities needed to become a competent mental health nurse, support worker or practitioner, the prominent ones include:

  • Excellent communication and listening skills;
  • Problem solving capabilities;
  • Patience and resilience;
  • An understanding of clinical governance and health and safety regulations;
  • An understanding of confidentiality and the rules regarding this within healthcare;
  • Good observational skills;
  • Psychosocial skills and abilities.

It is a role that requires the ability to work calmly under stress at times and you will be responsible for maintaining competence on a regular basis.
