Clients who receive care are, more often than not vulnerable, and protecting them through a robust framework is absolutely imperative.”

“First and foremost, as a Healthcare Assistant, you have to understand that when a client needs help with their activities and general daily living, it can be a very difficult transition for them. On that basis, you need to act with empathy, understanding and patience. A calm and reassuring demeanour is absolutely vital in putting a client at ease. You also have to ensure you can work safely, effectively, follow rules and procedures and also conduct the correct risk assessment at all times. I would also liaise with co-workers, other support workers and the client’s friends and family to find out as much information as possible about them, in order to find ways of making the transition more comfortable for them.”

Healthcare Assistant Job Brief:

Healthcare Assistants play a vital part in delivering client/patient-centred care for those people who require their services. It is a highly-responsible role that requires an understanding of healthcare rules, procedures and protocol, an ability to work calmly under pressure, an ability to provide consistent outstanding care and also an understanding of safeguarding and the need for client confidentiality. A number of care homes and care organizations have come under serious criticism over recent years, in particular how Healthcare Assistants and Care Workers look after the people within their care. Therefore, you must be able to always uphold and follow the values of the organization you are working for, and in particular, demonstrate the following skills, qualities and attributes at the interview.

Healthcare Assistant Assessable Key Skills, Qualities & Attributes:

  • CLIENT-CENTRED CARE – As a Healthcare Assistant, you must always provide client-centred care and focus on the needs of the patient, whether your looking after them at home, in hospital or within the care home establishment.
  • PATIENT RISK ASSESSMENT – An understanding of risk assessment is very important, especially if the client or patient is based in their own home. You will need to work with other organizations, such as social services, care workers and the fire service, to ensure the patient is safe in their own home and knows what to do in the event of an emergency.
  • SAFEGUARDING – Safeguarding is the protection of a client’s health and focuses on their wellbeing and human rights. At the Healthcare Assistant interview, be sure to provide details of your understanding of how safeguarding impacts on your role and the care you provide.
  • WORKING UNDER PRESSURE – The competency of being able to work under pressure will be assessed during your Healthcare Assistant interview. Be prepared for questions such as: “Can you provide an example of when you completed a difficult task whilst under pressure?”, and also: “How do you cope with pressure at work and how would you deal with a difficult or upset patient whom was under your care?”.
  • FOLLOWING RULES AND PROCEDURES – Your role as a Healthcare Assistant requires you to understand and adhere to numerous rules and procedures, and these include Health and Safety regulations, the Health and Safety at Work Act, Manual Handling procedures, the Health and Safety Executive, the Mental Health Act and quality/standards of care protocol. You will receive thorough training prior to taking up the role of Healthcare Assistant and it will be your task to successfully complete all training and implement what you have learned during your daily care activities.
