βI would tackle this type of situation head-on. The worst thing you can do is leave it, because this shows weak leadership and management, in my opinion. If other people in your team see you ignoring it, it can demotivate them. I would speak to the person initially to let them know I was aware of their underperformance, and I would ask them to explain the reasons for it. They may have personal issues or problems at home, in which case I could support them through it. However, they may not be aware of their underperformance or it may be down to a lack of self-motivation. If this were the case, I would give them clear instructions as to what they needed to do to improve, including a timescale for the turnaround to take place. I would then monitor their performance over the coming weeks to ensure they changed. To be truthful, if ever I manage a team, I always set definitive standards and expectations from the start because this helps prevent underperformance. “
