The role involves opening the store, taking orders and payments from customers, grinding the coffee beans and making coffee and other drinks to the correct specification, preparing and serving food in the correct way in line with food safety standards, keeping the shop clean and tidy, creating stock and food displays and providing exceptional customer service at all times. Finally, you must be flexible in your approach to working hours and act as a positive role model for the company at all times.”

Barista Job Brief:

The role of a Barista is extremely varied, and you will be required to utilize a large number of key skills and attributes to perform the role to the required standard. Although you will receive comprehensive on-the-job training as a Barista, it is important that you can provide great customer service, act as a positive role model for the coffee and drinks company you are employed by, be flexible in your role, potentially work unsociable hours, be reliable and trustworthy, have a basic understanding of numerical calculations and also follow strict food, hygiene and safety standards at all times.

Here is a comprehensive list of the key skills, qualities and attributes needed to be a Barista.

Barista Interview Assessable Key Skills, Qualities & Attributes:

During your preparation for the interview, focus on the following key areas:

  • Provide exceptional customer service at all times and adhere to the company ethics and values in respect of customer service;
  • Open up the store as and when required and work unsociable and long hours if required;
  • Work with other members of the Barista team to make drinks, prepare food and serve customers;
  • Keep the coffee shop or store clean, tidy and in line with the company guidelines in respect of branding and presentation;
  • Wear your Barista uniform with pride;
  • Prepare for pre-planned inspections by Health and Safety inspectors and Food Hygiene organizations;
  • Grind coffee beans and serve drinks in line with your initial Barista training;
  • Take payments, including cash and card;
  • Operate the till and service customers in a quick and efficient manner;
  • Deal with customer complaints in a positive manner by following your Barista training;
  • Serve hot and cold food whilst adhering to strict food safety standards;
  • Be prepared to cover additional shifts as and when required;
  • Prepare food displays in line with company banding.

5 TIPS FOR PASSING THE BARISTA INTERVIEW!

TIP #1 – Customer service is probably the most important element of the Barista role. Therefore, before you attend your Barista interview, think carefully about how you would demonstrate great customer service in this role.

TIP #2 – Before you attend your Barista interview, go onto the website of the company you are applying to join and find out their customer values. Make sure you can recite them word for word. So, whether you applying to be a Barista with Starbucks, Costa or other coffee/hot drinks company, make sure you know fully their customer service standards.

TIP #3 – As a Barista, you will be required to work unsociable hours. This may require you to arrive at work early to open the store, and also work long hours over the weekend. Before you attend the Barista interview, think about the hours you are prepared to work and make sure you stick to them once employed.

TIP #4 – Barista’s are required to follow strict food safety standards and hygiene regulations. Before you attend your Barista interview, you may decide to have an example of when you followed rules and procedures, and also perhaps have a brief understanding of the types of regulations coffee companies have to adhere to. These will include, but are not limited to, Health and Safety at Work regulations and Food Safety standards.
