Assistant Manager Job Brief:

Assistant Managers have the responsibility of supporting their manager in his or her duty to meet company goals, targets and priorities. They must ensure all company policies and procedures are adhered to at all times and they will be required to deputize for their manager as and when required. They will need to resolve any customer or client issues, solve difficult problems and ensure staff are hired and trained appropriately so they can perform their jobs to the best of their abilities.

  • COMMUNICATION SKILLS – Assistant managers must communicate effectively with staff, their senior managers, external suppliers and stakeholders and also customers/visiting guests.
  • RECRUITING AND DEVELOPING STAFF – As an Assistant Manager you will be required to hire and recruit staff as and when needed and also conduct staff appraisals on an annual basis, providing them with support and motivating them to achieve their company goals.
  • STAFF APPRAISALS – As the Assistant Manager you will normally conduct staff appraisals to ensure each team member is working towards the mission, ethos and goals of the company.
  • WORKING WHILST UNDER PRESSURE – Assistant manager roles inherently come with an element of stress and pressure. Therefore, you will need to demonstrate an ability to remain calm and composed during difficult situations with a clear focus on resolving them as efficiently and effectively as possible.
  • SUPPORTING THE MANAGEMENT TEAM – The senior management team will expect you to fully support them in their goals and strategic plans. You will be required to report to them on a regular basis on performance and developments within the team.
  • ORGANIZATIONAL ABILITIES – Assistant managers need to be capable of demonstrating effective organizational abilities and strong planning capabilities, foreseeing potential future problems, retainment of staff and also dealing with customer complaints and problems.

TIP #1 – During your Assistant Manager interview, be sure to provide evidence of where you meet the key qualities and attributes of leadership, being able to plan and prioritize, conduct appraisals of staff and also support your manager in his or her goals and targets.
