Understand the Senior Scope and Strategic Responsibilities

Before you step into the interview, you must have a clear grasp of what the Band 8 role entails. At this level, you are expected to balance operational delivery with strategic leadership, governance, workforce planning, and financial accountability.

• Study the job description and person specification in detail, highlighting advanced competencies such as strategic leadership, service redesign, business planning, financial management, and system-wide working.
• Map your experience to these requirements and prepare robust examples that show you can lead at scale, influence senior colleagues, and deliver sustainable improvements.
• Consider the wider organisational and system context: how does the role contribute to Trust priorities, ICS/system objectives, national NHS targets, and long-term patient outcomes?

Show How You Embed NHS Values in Culture and Strategy

The NHS Constitution values — working together for patients, respect and dignity, commitment to quality of care, compassion, improving lives, and everyone counts — remain central at Band 8. However, the emphasis shifts towards how you embed these values in your team, service, and organisational culture.

• Prepare senior-level examples, using the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result), where you have championed NHS values through leadership decisions, service design, or workforce initiatives.
• Explain how your actions influenced culture, improved patient experience, supported staff wellbeing, or strengthened equality, diversity and inclusion at a wider level.
• In your answers, explicitly connect your leadership style and strategic choices back to NHS values, demonstrating that they guide not just what you do, but how you lead others.

Anticipate Strategic Leadership and Transformation Questions

Band 8 panels will focus heavily on your ability to lead complex change, manage risk, and deliver high-quality services within financial and operational constraints. Expect questions such as:

“Tell me about a time you led a large-scale service change or transformation. What was the impact?”

“How do you balance quality, safety, staff wellbeing and financial pressures when making decisions?”

“How do you provide assurance around governance, risk, and patient safety in your area of responsibility?”

To prepare:

• Identify 3–4 high-impact leadership examples, such as redesigning pathways, delivering cost improvement plans without compromising quality, leading cross-site initiatives, or implementing new models of care.
• Use clear, measurable outcomes (e.g., reduced serious incidents, improved KPIs, cost savings achieved, enhanced patient experience scores, improved staff survey results).
• Reflect on how you manage complex performance issues, support underperforming teams, handle conflict between stakeholders, and maintain visibility and credibility as a senior leader.

Prepare Strategic, Insightful Questions for the Panel

At the end of the interview, you will be invited to ask questions. This is your opportunity to demonstrate strategic thinking, curiosity about the organisation’s direction, and a genuine commitment to improving services. Avoid questions focused on salary or annual leave. Instead, ask about priorities, challenges, and opportunities for the role.

• Ask about the key strategic priorities for the service over the next 12–24 months and how success will be measured.
• Explore how the role interfaces with other divisions, partner organisations, or the wider system (e.g., ICS, primary care, community services).
• Enquire about the culture of the team, support for leadership development, and how the organisation lives its values in practice.
