LEADERSHIP INTERVIEW TIP #1

The aim of a leadership interview is to assess your potential to be a great leader. Therefore, you will have to answer hypothetical interview questions that analyze what you would do in certain situations. Think carefully about how you would deal with underperformance in a team, how you would delegate tasks, and give constructive feedback as a leader for their company.

LEADERSHIP INTERVIEW TIP #2

One of the most common leadership interview questions is, what is your style of leadership? There are essentially seven leadership styles as follows:

• Autocratic.
• Authoritative.
• Coaching.
• Democratic.
• Pacesetting.
• Affiliative.
• Laissez-faire.

Before your interview, consider which three leadership styles are most applicable to you, and explain the type of situation you would use each one in.

LEADERSHIP INTERVIEW TIP #3

During any leadership job interview, you must answer behavioural type interview questions. Questions that start with, tell me about a time when you…, are commonplace during interviews that assess leadership potential. In your answers to the behavioural interview questions, it is important to give a specific situation you have previously been in where you have demonstrated strong leadership capabilities.

What’s the difference between leadership and management? This question comes up often during leadership skills interviews! A simple way to differentiate between leadership and management is as follows:

“The difference between leadership and management is that leadership is inspiring, motivating, and directing a team of people towards achieving a set goal, project, or target, whilst management is making effective use of the resources, tools, and people you have at your disposal to achieve the same company goal, project or target.”

LEADERSHIP INTERVIEW TIP #5

During your leadership interview, you will have to prove that you have the ability to make difficult decisions. Think of a situation you have been in where you made an unpopular decision that was in the best interests of the organization. We also recommend you think of the decision-making process you follow whenever making important decisions as a leader.
