• Consider the broader context of the role within your department and the Trust. How does your work link to patient outcomes, service delivery, and national NHS priorities?

Demonstrate Alignment with NHS Values

The NHS Constitution values, working together for patients, respect and dignity, commitment to quality of care, compassion, improving lives, and everyone counts, are central to every interview. At Band 7 level, you are expected to embed these values within your team.

• Prepare examples of when you have upheld these values in practice, ideally using the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result).
• Be ready to explain not just what you did, but also why your actions mattered in the context of patient care, staff wellbeing, or service improvement.
• When answering questions, explicitly link your responses back to NHS values to show that they underpin your leadership approach.

Anticipate Leadership and Service Improvement Questions

Band 7 panels often focus on your ability to manage people, lead change, and improve services. Expect questions such as:

“Tell me about a time you led a service improvement project. What was the outcome?”

“How do you manage poor performance within your team?”

“What steps would you take to ensure patient safety and quality of care?”

To prepare:

• Identify 3–4 strong leadership examples where you made a tangible difference, such as improving patient flow, reducing risk, or developing staff capability.

• Think about how you handle challenging conversations, conflict resolution, and motivating teams in high-pressure situations.
