“I am a highly-organized, resourceful, and reliable employee who has a track record of success in previous roles. My industrious approach to working means you will have the peace of mind that all tasks and duties will be carried out on time and to the expected standard. I understand that working at home requires trust, a disciplined approach to responsibilities, and above all, integrity. In my last role, my manager often praised me for the fact that she could leave me alone to get on with my work safe in the knowledge it would always be done as per her instructions. Outside of work, I keep myself fit and active and I am someone who is committed to continuous learning and development. I have read the job description for this role and I am confident I am well-suited to the position and I will add value to your organization, albeit remotely if you hire me.”
“Although I am a strong collaborator who enjoys the company of other people, I find I am more effective and I get more done when I work from home alone. Because I am a highly organized person who always plans my work meticulously, I feel happier in my work if I am left alone to work through whatever duties I am responsible for. Because I will have less travel time, my energy and productivity levels increase significantly working from home which will be of benefit to your company. I am also saving up to buy a new home with my partner and I am motivated by having no travel costs. I also find working from home forces me to be highly organized and the fact I am a very clean, tidy and disciplined person means I have control over my working environment.”
Another great way to prove to the hiring manager you are prepared for working remotely is to talk about your ‘work-at-home checklist’. You can even reference the checklist during your interview to further give the employer the peace of mind you are going to deliver maximum productivity in the role. Let’s take a look at an example checklist below that will improve your chances of getting hired.
EXAMPLE WORK FROM HOME CHECKLIST
CHECKLIST ITEM #1 – A DEDICATED WORK-AT-HOME WORKSTATION.
Choose a dedicated place in your home where you will work remotely from. The work at home workstation must be quiet, free from distractions, and have a strong internet connection and WIFI signal for your phone. Some employers will require a minimum download speed of between five and 15 MBPS for working at home jobs and so make sure you study the job description before applying.
CHECKLIST ITEM #2 – LAPTOP, HEADPHONES & MIC.
Some employers will provide you with a laptop to use during the working day. However, if you already have a laptop that you are familiar with, and that you can use whilst working from home, it will be to your advantage. We also recommend investing in a quality headset that blocks out distractions and incorporates a microphone that has an adjustable volume setting. Conversely, most quality laptops already have an inbuilt microphone and speakers which will negate the need to invest in the headset.
CHECKLIST ITEM #3 – PRODUCTIVITY TRACKING APPS & SOFTWARE TOOLS.
There are some fantastic apps and software tools available that aid effective remote working. They also allow you to chare progress with other team members, managers, or supervisors. Examples include:
Review the above apps before your interview, choose the one you like the most and familiarize yourself with how it works. The majority of productivity apps allow you to sign up for a free trial, so you have the advantage of using it for a few days prior to your interview. Following the above advice will help demonstrate further to the employer you are fully prepared for the responsibility that comes with working from home.
CHECKLIST ITEM #4 – RULES & BOUNDARIES!
The most effective employees who work from home set themselves defined rules and boundaries, and they stick to them! These include:
The above items will help you get started with creating your own work from home checklist which we recommend you refer to during your interview.
The following five tips have been designed to help you prepare fully for your work-from-home job interview. Interviews for working at home / remote working jobs are much different from standard interviews, and the type of questions you must answer will be based on your ability to plan and organize your work, set yourself goals, and deliver maximum results for the company with little supervision.
WORK FROM HOME INTERVIEW TIP #1
Before you undertake your work from home interview, consider how you plan and organize your day. What steps do you follow to prioritize your day, and how do you set yourself goals? There will be questions that assess how self-sufficient you are remote working, so make sure you have your answers already prepared.
WORK FROM HOME INTERVIEW TIP #2
One of the most important things to have organized in preparation for any work-at-home job is your workspace. What do you do to minimize distractions, and how much time will you be sitting at your desk during the working day? Having a dedicated workstation in your household is a great way to demonstrate to the hiring manager you are fully prepared and organized for the work at home post.
WORK FROM HOME INTERVIEW TIP #3
One of the common problems faced by employers when allowing employees to work is communication. A common question asked during work from home interviews is how would you communicate remotely with your team or manager whilst working at home? A great way to communicate regularly with your team is to set up a WhatsApp group so people in the team, and the manager, can maintain regular communication during normal working hours. Another great way to communicate regularly with your manager is to send them an update at the end of each working day on the progress you have been making in line with your duties and responsibilities.
WORK FROM HOME INTERVIEW TIP #4
Prioritizing your work effectively in accordance with the business goals of the company will form an important part of your working day whilst working from home. Before your interview, consider how you prioritize your tasks and how you ensure there is flexibility built into your day to respond quickly to urgent tasks.
WORK FROM HOME INTERVIEW TIP #5
Before undertaking your working from home / remote working job interview, think of three smart questions to ask at the end of your interview. Once the interview is complete, whether it’s face-to-face or online, the interviewer will give you the chance to ask some questions of your own. We recommend asking questions that demonstrate you are a committed employee who wants their business to succeed. Avoid questions about pay, perks and benefits of the job, and holiday entitlement.
