SUGGESTED ANSWER:
“Thank you for inviting me to be interviewed for this sales position today. My name is Richard and over the years I have been keen to develop the right mindset, the right skills and qualities, and gain the experience necessary to become a highly effective sales-person. I have a confident and positive demeanor; I communicate with confidence and resilience, and I am a very good listener. I believe listening is one of the most underrated skills used in sales. I have worked in numerous positions that required me to attract new sales prospects, build long-lasting relationships with customers, and work toward achieving difficult sales targets. I have a strong entrepreneurial spirit, I react well to challenges, and I am the type of person who always allocates time each month to my ongoing professional development. Whilst I appreciate you are interviewing lots of talented candidates for this sales position today, I believe the main factor that helps me stand out from the competition is my drive and passion to continually improve. I am very competitive and I want to be the best that I can possibly be.”
SUGGESTED ANSWER
“I chose a career in sales for three reasons. The first reason is the fact that I am very sociable and I thrive when I am dealing with people. I am a people person at heart and someone that enjoys the challenge of a difficult prospect. The second reason I chose a career in sales is because of the variety that comes with the role. There are many different ways to sell to people, and I enjoy the fact that I get to tweak and change my sales process to help increase conversion rates. I am passionate about self-development and there is always something new to learn in sales. That is one of the reasons why I spend time reading and learning, so I can implement new sales strategies into my daily work. The third reason I chose a career in sales is because of the opportunity to earn a higher than average income. If I do well, I get rewarded. I have ambitious plans outside of work and the only way I will achieve those goals is if I do well for my employer.”

Yes! I Want To Pass My Interview! There are several essential skills and qualities needed to be consistently effective in sales. Whether you are applying to become a sales rep, a sales executive, or a sales manager, you will need to demonstrate all of the following to be successful.
CONFIDENCE & RESILIENCE
You must show confidence in the products and services you are selling; confidence in your style of communication without being arrogant, and resilience when things are getting tough. If you are experiencing a difficult day, you have to overcome it by analyzing what is going on and making changes to your sales approach.
DRIVE AND A PASSION FOR SALES
If you are not self-motivated, and you are not naturally aligned to a career in sales, it will be very difficult to meet your sales targets. Salespeople are self-motivated individuals who often have ambitious plans outside of work that drive them to be successful. Drive and passion are natural traits – you either have them, or you don’t.
PEOPLE SKILLS
Being a PEOPLE-PERSON is another important quality needed to work in sales. Each prospect is different in terms of their needs, their objections, and their motivators. A competent sales-person will be able to quickly establish what each of these things is, and communicate in a way that helps close the sale quickly.
EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION
Communication and listening skills have to be two of the most important skills and qualities needed to work in sales. Communication is not just about how you speak, it’s about how you listen and how you ask the right questions.
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Taking responsibility for your professional development is vital in sales because you can never afford to sit still. There is always something new to learn and it will be your responsibility to read books, undertake online courses and listen to podcasts that will help you to continually improve and exceed your sales targets.
KNOWLEDGE OF YOUR INDUSTRY, PRODUCTS & SERVICES
Finally, you need in-depth knowledge of your products and services. If you don’t know the ins and outs of your products, you won’t be able to answer any questions the customer has and you will lose plenty of sales as a result. Having knowledge of everything you are selling will enable you to quickly overcome sales objections.
There are seven stages of the sales process that you must be familiar with to be successful.
STAGE 1 – PROSPECTING
PROSPECTING is the act of sourcing new leads and a great place to start is on LinkedIn. More often than not, key decision-makers can be found on LinkedIn quickly and if you have a LinkedIn Premium account you will be able to contact them directly via InMail.
STAGE 2 – ESTABLISHING CONTACT
The second stage of the sales process is to ESTABLISH CONTACT. Salespeople will often reach out directly to prospects if they feel they are a good fit for the service or product they are selling. Alternatively, proactive salespeople will post useful and informative content online to encourage people to contact them directly. Again, LinkedIn can be used to great effect with this method.
STAGE 3 – PROSPECT QUALIFYING
The third stage of the sales process is to QUALIFY THE PROSPECT. Effective salespeople will achieve this by asking relevant questions including assessing the challenges the prospect is facing in their business, and who makes the buying decisions.
STAGE 4 – NURTURING THE PROSPECT
During stage 4 for the sales process, you will need to NURTURE THE PROSPECT and establish a common connection. People often know they are being sold to, which is why it is so important to build good relationships with sales prospects over time.
STAGE 5 – PRESENTING THE OFFER
At some stage during the sales process, you must present your offer including the price point. Experienced salespeople know exactly when to present their offer and it will depend on the hunger of the prospect to buy and their circumstances when this takes place.
STAGE 6 – OVERCOMING OBJECTIONS
The fastest way to overcome sales objections is to make the value of the product outweighs the cost. Overcoming objections can be achieved by asking relevant questions and providing assurances that the product or service will work. If you have total confidence in your product or service you may decide to offer a money-back guarantee.
STAGE 7 – CLOSING THE SALE
If you have a motivated buyer the closing of the sale will be relatively straight-forward. Be sure to make the closing of the sale and the transaction itself seamless. Have your payment staff or invoicing team on hand to take care of any paperwork there and then, because glitches or delays in the payment handling process may cause the prospect or customer to change their mind.
